Here is the final piece along with some of the process.
(you guys said you like seeing those shots so I'll try to show more of it from now on)
I used water-soluble wax pastels, prismacolor pencils, nue pastels and acrylics, on Rives bfk paper.
In the process shots, you're seeing more of the flower process.
I hadn't intended on painting the bees in there until the last minute. So I made some in photoshop, printed them out, cut them up and moved the cut out bees around the painting to try and find nice spots for them to be painted in. When I found a fitting place, I took a yellow pencil, sketched the bees in and used mostly the wax pastels to paint the bees on there. In the 4th panel of the process shots you'll see the cut out and the painted bee
I used Prismacolor nue pastels and acrylics to dirty up the flowers.
I really enjoy that process, it feels good to "mess up" the painting after spending so many hours trying to make everything perfect.
This and the other painting "the Pride" will be shown at the Supersonic Electronic show at Spoke Art Gallery on the 5th of January. If you're around those parts, check out the show, it will be a good one for sure!

I looked forever for a frame for this, then stumbled across the perfect one at a Brooklyn 2nd hand store.

So far it's just colored pencil and I'm super happy with how rich it's coming out

The paper I used is Rives bfk printmaking paper.
So far it's only prismacolor pencil, just Poppy Red on top of the paper.
Then white for the highlights and Rouge Toscan (red) for the darker values.
All nicely blending with that blending stump.
I went trough about 3 Poppy Red pencils to get that base down.
I usually would start with a watercolor background.... but I forgot, ha. seriously.
The next step is adding Water-soluble wax pastels (Caran D'Ache) on top of the color pencil.
This is a new step in my process.
The pastels are freakn amazing though, I strongly recommend using then over your pencils

I'll keep you guys posted on more process.
I wanted to try and do a video for this one but had to start it faster then I intended.

It's been a while since my last post, especial something painted.
Well here you go!
This piece is kicking off a new serious of paintings inspired by vintage poster/tattoo art, while keeping my love for the "painterly" look.
The mediums used thus far have been:
Watercolor Pencils
Colored pencil (Prismacolor)
Acrylic
Water soluble oils (Duo Aqua Oils)
On Rives bfk paper (great stuff but I think my process might be pushing it to the limit with this particular piece)

So far I really like the outcome. I'd say its about 75% done.
I'm starting out by blocking in color with watercolor and acrylics. I've got the skin tone built up to a point that I like. The next step is to bring some life into it by dirtying it up a bit. I'll do this with Oils (water based), some matte medium, and Nue Pastels. Should be very interesting.

OH! This will also have hand done script incorporated in that bottom area I haven't finished yet.
Should be cool if I don't botch the hell out of it!

This piece and a few other will be in a show January 5th in San franCisco along side a number of other outstanding artist. The show is being brought to you by Supersonic Electronic, a fantastic art site. Check it out if you don't know it:

This is a concept "sketch" of the main character, Jackson.
The background is done with ink, the character is digital.

This new "thing" that I'm doing is really just about experimenting.
Though the figures tend to be "attractive", the new direction places less emphasis on sexuality. I simply start out with a loose line drawing of a figure and experiment with building up and breaking down color and shapes in and around said figure. It is not only a salubrious experimentation with the figure but also an exploration of mediums. This process is more sporadic and embraces imperfection, rather then focusing mainly on rendering "perfect" realistic skin.
...It's also a lot of fun.

So I took today off from working mainly because my wrist has been bothering me slightly. So I spent most of the day on the web finding inspiration in various places.
I some how ended up designing a fan FFFFound poster.
Now I know I said I wasn't supposed to be working but... design is rather therapeutic for me.
I found the images used on the top of the poster in ffffound and thought they represented the site in a well rounded way (especially Voyage, ha)
I did the hand type with a Japanese Pentel color brush (awesome!)

So, On the bottom of this post I showed the two loose thumbnails I showed them(they chose the non blue one) then a screen shot of the whole thing in progress.
I did the illustration in pieces.
I worked on the figure, cage and background in separate windows.
I did this because I was working so large. It was much easier on my computer to lighten the layer load.
The cage was really fun to do. I did the whole thing using scanned in textures and gradients. It took a while but the outcome I think is rich and appealing.

I've also attached a few photos they sent to me so you can see the scale of this thing. Should be fun to see in person, never seen my art blown up this large

So this is a piece Ive been casually working on for some time now. It started off as a commission sketch and I liked the sketch so much that I decided to turn it into a full blown illustration.
Not really a point to this besides completely geeking out to a super hot representation of Caitlin Fairchild.
Had a lot of fun making this, hope you guys like it!!

I couldn't sleep about 2 nights ago so I started painting. Usually I plan out every brush stroke but this was more about relaxing and just letting things happen.
This was a piece I started a few months back but only got the face %70 rendered out. I got inspired and decided to fuck it up...In a good way

I used tape to distress areas. If I made a mistake, I just went with it, rather then stressing about sloppiness or refined detail.
The piece started out as more of a rectangle but as time went by I started to see it more as a square, so I cropped it. It feels better to me.
Hope you like it.... Well I guess I don't really care, I'm not even sure how I feel about it yet.
...But I think I love it

OK, I LOVE this piece!!! SEE, I can draw dudes, ha

I actually did it on a friends computer while I was traveling for a show (Photoshop CS4, I prefer CS3)
It was one of those pieces that just came together in all the right ways.
All the line work was done with pencil then scanned in and I retraced the line in photoshop to make it look more refined.
The hair is done with scanned in brush strokes made with a Japanese calligraphy brush, then finished with white soft brush strokes in photoshop. The skin....well that's kind of an extensive process. I'll make a video of that SOON so you guys can steal my technique and soul, ha.
The Belt was all done in photoshop using gradients, scanned in textures and the shape tool. The sword was done the same way. The blood on his arm was done by scanning in ink blotches on watercolor paper, then colorized in photoshop. I actually used black ink for that.

This is the First cover for a new series with a old character, Elric. I'm pretty sure I'm doing the next few covers for this and I'm going to go ALL out for them. So keep your eyes peeled and go buy them (when they're out)

Inspired by an artist named Jeff Depner http://jeffdepner.com/ I actually ended up making a painting of this for a Superhero show but give it to a friend before I could scan in the painting.

OK, FINALLY A NEW IMAGE!!!
I cant wait to post all the new stuff I'm doing but I cant till they are published, so stay tuned.
In the mean time here is a piece I did for the Tata Gala!!
I did it the night before the Sarasota show. I actually hung the show then rushed to my dad's house and cranked this out in the living room. It was actually really challenging to do, not being in my studio. I had nothing!! I had to go to a local art store and buy all my supplies....for one piece, ridiculous.
Fortunately, it turned out rather nice.
It's done with a watercolor base, colored pencils and acrylics.
Its 24"x36" on Rives bfk toned paper (great stuff)

I also included the drawing process, dont on 11"x17" bond paper with prismacolor Col-Erase pencils

I actually just finished the poster for the NYC Tata Gala so look for that in the next day or two. I used this piece for it. That show starts February 5th at Sacred Gallery in Manhattan. More on that soon.

So I collect old ass Playboys and what not, and there was this sped with this model I really liked. She was making the best faces and got super inspired to create something. So I clipped out my favorite faces and working on something,and stuck it in my kitchen...I f**kn love it!!!!

This ad is made for print not the web so the text is a bit hard to read in your screen I'm sure.
This was a really challenging piece and it's a piece that I believe captures the new direction my fine art work is gravitating to, blending soft traditional reading with stark colored geometric shapes that move the eye around the figure. I'm really digging the whole idea, now I just have to perfect the craft. Expect a lot more of this in the future!!

Then a layer of gel matte medium.
I'm not crazy about the way this scanned in, the original in person looks much better.

Here is the call for entries page I designed with My work and of course the incredible Nathan Fox, it's going to be in next months Juxtapoz and ImagineFX. In fact ImagineFX is doing a big story on the event, so this year is going to be really big. Look for that
The site is updated but it was just updated today so there are still a few things missing but more photos and info will be hitting the site very soon.

This year we are dong it just a bit different.
Now when you submit your art through the site you will automatically be in our digital gallery for everyone to see.
(the digital gallery will appear after the shows)
We are making it mandatory that you submit through the site. The images you guys send to the site will be judged. We will go though the "best of the breast" work and decide who gets to show at the Sarasota FL. show and then the NEW YORK show!!!
The reason why we are doing it this way is because the event is getting a ton of attention and a TON of art. We simply did not have the space for all the art we received last year (though we made it work well :) )
Submitting through the site will make it more manageable.

Also, new on the site is a Donate button!!!
We've Hhd a lot of people that have wanted to contribute but either were not artistically inclined or simply didn't have time to do a piece. Well if you hit the donate button and follow the steps you can dramatically help. The money goes to Breast cancer research AND to putting on the event (unfortunately putting on a big show like this isn't cheap)

Not sure about anything on this right now but Im digging where it's going.

So here ya go, my 3rd Hack / Slash cover. I really like doing these because Tim just lets me go crazy and I feel like good things come from crazy people.... Im not sure what I mean by that, haha
The ideabehind this cover was Structured Chaos.
To put this beautiful girl and a chaotic setting. Its pretty much the essence of the book, this sexy bad ass girl killing killers.
I also wanted to do something different, something your not use to seeing when you walk into a comic store. I wanted you to be able to take the final piece and hang it on the wall.

Everything is traditional except the type.
the mediums are in this order
Rives BFK paper 18"x24"
Watercolor
Prismacolor pencil
Acrylic
Artist tape
Prismacolor Nupastel
and water based oils

ok, is a drawing on 18x24 Rives bfk paper, great stuff, takes dry mediums and wet mediums.
The purple is my watercolor base
The model is my friend Mirisa, she poses for all the hack/slash stuff I do.

After the watercolor base is dry I lay white prismacolor pencil down to create a wax build up on the paper surface. This makes the pencils blend much better.
As you go down you can see that I just keep developing the drawing, laying down color and blending it.
I blend with paper towels and a blending stump, google it if you don't know what that is.
The picture on the right is a picture I found in a magazine and I wanted to use that as a reference for the skin color. I like the browns and greens in it. I use photography a lot for inspiratio

Now I have the figure pretty much done, so I begin the background. I wanted this cover to look crazy chaotic but still be very appealing and easy to look at (I've been in this ridiculous fine art mode recently).
The paint is acrylic Behr house paint. I used that medal thing (black plastic thing next to the paint) to get all the straight lines and I painted artist tape to give it even more texture.
The last process is smoothing out the skin with water based oils. sorry i forgot to take of pic of that :(

It feels so good to be using pencils again, I feel like its been forever sense I worked traditionally
Anyway, This piece is kicking off a serise of fine art paintings.
They are going to be similar to the shapes painting I did not to long ago, but I'm going to make these extremely realistic, but still the same concept. I really cant wait to finish this but its 3 in the morning and I'm fighting a cold. Hopefully if my body allows me Ill have this finished by the morning, otherwise keep an eye out for it, it's gonna be a good one!!

So I bought this crappy Crayola sketchbook at CVS today, because I refuse to buy another moleskin Sketchbook. I hate those freakn things, there is to much pressure to do something great, and your constantly bombarded by people wanting to look through it.... awwwhhh. I feel so much safer with a little piece of crap.
You know when you get a new sketchbook and you just have to draw something in it right away??? Well I for some reason wanted to draw dogs. I don't think I've ever drawn a dog in my life but let me tell you, they are really fun to sketch out.

OH.. and make them look sad, way more fun when they are sad.....I don't know why .

well, it's a photo illustration.
So I just completed a photo shoot with the lovely Abbi Ptak
I was going through the photos and decided to start working on an illustration idea.
Well, normally I throw a photo into photoshop and start working out loose ideas to paint from, but the more I played with it the more I liked it. So I just kept going and going. I's to the point where I really don't feel like painting it would do it justice, I feel like it's great the way it is...so what's the point???
I don't know, I might end up painting it but it just seems like a waist of time.

Her Shadows Make Light

So I woke up pretty early this morning to start a cover for a novel that was commissioned a few days ago. (cant say what it is, don't ask)
Before I start a big project I usually loosen up by sketching random stuff (mostly woman).
Well I started sketching this face, then did a little more...and a little more. 4 hours later I'm scanning in ink blotches and black chalk dust.
I HAVE ART A.D.D!!!!!
This was pretty fun because it's traditional mediums scanned in then collaged together using photoshop. I cut around some of the color and line to make it look slightly more sharp edged and manipulated the pinks and yellows to be a but more bright and did most of the value changes digitally too. Oh yeah, and the pink hair lines are digital.... So I guess it's actually Digital...kinda, yeah I guess so.
Anyway, this was just for fun and therapy for the soul

But this was an exception. I was approached by a fellow artist who wanted me to combine Mucha with my own style. Having a full Mucha sleeve myself I thought this would be fun. So I took it on! I referenced the Flowers and the 3 girls from multiple Mucha books and added the rest.
It was really fun, the drawing is huge, 18"x24". It took me forever. I'm not used to drawing so much stuff in one composition, If you know my work you know what I mean.
It was fun to go back to one of my favorite artist and rediscover how f*ckn awesome he was!!!
I added some cool stuff like splatters and paint streaks just for fun, It wont be apart of the final tattoo, I'm just so used to "print" that I had to add stuff to it.

Had some fun with this piece
it's just colored pencils and a but of oil on Rives toned BFK paper
Had to do some digital work on it, had to make the top larger for the logo, so a lot of cut and pasting
I do dig the background though kinda spontaneous.

It's the cover for a gamer convention book (RPG) that's happening this weekend in Atlanta....That's about all I know, ha

started it with watercolor and prismacolor pencil on Rives bfk paper (toned)
then mounted it on to masonite and covered it with a matte gel medium and did oil rubs on top of the dried gel medium.

I LOVE doing stuff like this..
I was trying to go to bed but was just to in the mood to make something, so I got up around 4 in the morning and just started sketching on my new intuos 4 (no bid deal) :)
and just went crazy with it.
I'm not sure why but I am so attracted to this kind of work.
Both in style and execution.
I think it's just such a diversion from my "normal" work that it lets my kinda relax and just have fun, almost therapeutic in a way, yeah
anyway, thought I'd share.

sorry for the lack of post, I've actually been doing a bunch of comic covers recently. But unfortunately I cant show them until they are published
So in the mean time here are some of the covers that I've done. I know these are older images but I just got around to shooting the actual printed covers....get off my back

Also I finally got around to creating a new card (which I'm actually really proud of)
the last few cards have been ultra simple on the backside(name, email). I do really like simple design but I just felt like I needed to say more. I thought this was an attractive solution.
I really don't know dick about design but for those of you who are starting out in this business make sure you leave the backside of the card in a matte finish.
this will let potential clients mark the card and write notes on how awesome you are
I was inspired by a number of business cards I found in a book called The Best Of Business Card Design 8

In used Times New Roman for the font. I felt this was appropriate for the illustration. It has this vintage feel to it but still strongly personifies class with the wright kerning.
Again, I'm not a graphic designer and don't pretend to be. So all of you illustrators out there, do what I say and not what I do, Ask a graphic designer for help when your designing your card/site/identity, because unless you're Sean Chapman, you probably suck......

done with watercolor first then colored pencil for the skin and snake, copic marker and acrylic for the hair and lines, water based oil for the background and shirt....its a mouthful but it was fun

and my traditional process does not like to be rushed.
and to make it worst, I think it came out even better then most of my traditional pieces....that bums me out but at least I gave the client something they loved
I promise the next one will be painted

I finally got my work back from the October shows, now I'm in the process of scanning all the images. This part sucks because I have a tiny scanner and work way to large.
oh well, here is the first image I've scanned
it's 20"x31", done on Stonehenge printmaking paper mounted to masonite
I used watercolors for a base coat then rendered the skin with prismacolor pencils
after that I busted out the house paint (Behr) for the sea and sky
then I moved on to the hair with marker and a bit if acrylic
I finished it up with washes of water based oil

I was in the middle of a shoot and I noticed that my model looked kinda like Caitlin Fairchild from Gen 13
I stopped the shoot and immediately ran to Walmart to find some sort of a costume that looked like Caitlins

with a bit of manipulation to the outfit, I created a Campbell girl!!!!
I'm pretty sure this was one of my life goals, haha

anyway, I can't really use it for anything.
I just thought it was awesome and wanted to share

this is a commission for a dude I met at the new york con a few months back
he wanted me to illustrate a girl he know from a site called burning angel.
It was kinda hard because the pictures were like an inch and i really couldnt see the tattoos, oh well, it turned out ok

I will say I'm getting sick of the "Erik, draw me a girl with tattoos"
I really want to expand... like.. girl without tattoos, theres a fresh concept, haha
besides tattoos are for wimps, and i got a knuckle sandwich waiting to be tasted by some wimp..... Sean, that means you buckaroo... yeah i said it

I really was in the mood to do somrthing fun, big, and loose, ive used this face before but i thought id give it a try again, Im really working in try to build my confidence with large stokes, it easy on small work but its a whole different thing on large scale peices.
